  • Scenarios in details

    In order to illustrate their specific multilingual and multicultural profiles, students can store samples of their work in the Dossier of their Academic ePortfolio.

    Scenario 1: Post-catastrophe building project in a multicultural context

    A village has recently been devastated by a flood. You and your co-student are members of two teams of architects and engineers from different cultural contexts. You have been contracted to work together towards the rapid construction of pre-fabricated housing. One team is from the country where the flood has occurred; the second consists of members of an NGO.

    Scenario 2: Presenting a proposal in a business context

    You work for an industrial component supplier in Detroit. Your company has decided to set up a new factory and is considering two different cities in Europe. In this context, you have to do some research on the potential of each city, and propose one of them for the location of the new factory to a group of colleagues around the world.

    Scenario 3: Reporting in an international project meeting

    You are involved in an interdisciplinary international project concerning the quality of higher education programmes and you represent two countries in addition to your own in the project. You are required to report on the existing structures/strategies and developments of the issue in question in the three countries and evaluate them on the basis of your own expertise. The report is to be written in English, but part of the background information is only available in other languages. You will also have to prepare a multilingual oral presentation of the key points to be delivered in an international project meeting.

    Scenario 4: Hosting a multilingual group of business partners

    You are working in an international company and you are in charge of hosting a visiting group of business partners. These visitors speak Portuguese, English, Spanish and German. Your assignments include:

    • Receiving the visitors and presenting the visit schedule;
    • Presenting the company;
    • Hosting a business dinner.

    Scenario 5: Studying abroad – communicating locally (Studying in an international master program and communicating by e-mail in the local language)

    You are studying in an international Master Program in English together with international and local students or you are studying in a bilingual university in one of the two official languages. You have little competences in the (other) local language, which is not necessary for your studies. To improve your contact with locals and colleagues and for better integration locally, you would like to be able to understand e-mails and to write e-mails, or parts thereof in different languages especially also in the local language.

    Scenario 6: Improving listening – Understanding academic lectures and presentations in different cultural contexts

    You are an ERASMUS student from Germany, Turkey and/or from the UK, China or USA which are studying one semester at the Bremen University. You are aiming at improving your understanding of lectures in foreign languages / your second language /your heritage language. In this scenario you are going to work on listening competencies regarding lectures and seminars. You have applied to attend the multilingual tutorial program, where you are supported by a student-tutor. This program means self-directed learning in peer groups with tutor advice, independent regarding places, time steps, using EPOS, the Bremen e-Portfolio, as guide and portfolio for independent learning. You are signing a learning agreement at the beginning. Please note: this scenario could also be transferred to other cultural contexts/languages. In that case, simply adapt the general idea of this scenario.

    Scenario 7: Business Turkish – Adapting Selling and Buying Habits in Intercultural Contexts

    You are a student of business economics and have Turkish as your language of origin. German-Turkish business relations are of crucial importance. This scenario should help you to develop language competencies, useful for your studies. Furthermore, you could learn how to effectively use your multilingual repertoire in writing and speaking. Due to the fact that in your context English serves as a link language between German and Turkish, all three languages will be involved in this project.

    Scenario 8: Sprachlernerfahrungen reflektieren - Sprachkompetenzen (mit dem ESP) sichtbar machen

    In diesem Szenarium geht es darum, dir selber der eigenen Sprachlernerfahrungen und der eigenen Sprachkompetenzen bewusst zu werden und diese für andere sichtbar zu machen. Dies geschieht durch die Zusammenstellung und Kommentierung eines Dossiers, das Teil des Europäischen Sprachenportfolios ist, durch die Ausarbeitung einer Präsentation, durch das Halten eines Kurzvortrages. Die kritische Durchsicht und die Auseinandersetzung mit den eigenen Arbeiten sind Basis für die Planung weiterer Sprachlernaktivitäten im Sinne des lebenslangen Lernens.

    Scenario 9: Discussing worlds beyond words

    You are going to discover together with your tandem partner words which are specific to your own and to your tandem partner’s language and culture. You are going to explain the words, describe the concepts they refer to and learn more about their cultural and historical connotations. On this basis you are going to reflect about your intercultural experiences and finally to share your experience with another tandem couple.

    Scenario 10: Bridging the gap: L’adaptation publicitaire

    You work for an international publishing company that is launching a new advertising campaign in different countries. You are part of a team who is going to work on the adaptation of several advertisements from one language and culture into different ones, taking into account the specific rules of this kind of professional task.
